KDCF Society is really delighted to be in a position to help to connect concerned corporations with the relevant stakeholders so that we may jointly improve the condition of the Kota Damansara Forest. On 24 November 2013, around 40 GE staff and their family members helped rehabilitate an area of Kota Damansara Community Forest Reserve near Rimba Riang in Section 9.
Arriving early at 7.30am, the volunteers started work at around 8.30am and planted 290 saplings of three forest species, namely Meranti Tembaga, Meranti Rambai Daun and Kapur. The trees were provided by the Selangor Forestry Department from its forest nursery in Sungai Buloh. Some 10 Foresty staff were around to help facilitate the tree-planting work. A number of KDCF Society representatives were also in hand to help the volunteers.
The amazing volunteers, who included children, managed to plant all the trees in around an hour, a record time for any tree-planting effort in KDCF.
Keith Chew, a relative to a GE staff, brought along his 10-year-old daughter named Shyanne. “I brought her along as I want her to understand how tree grows. I also want to install a sense of gotong-royong, the community work in her,” Chew said. Chew added that Shyanne had asked him to take some pictures of the trees they had planted. “She said we’ll visit the trees again when they grow bigger,” Chew added while smiling.
Apart from the tree-planting activity, GE has provided KDCF Society a small administrative grant, which will enable us to replenish tools to be used for the construction of two new sustainable forest trails for KDCF. Building these two trails will commence in January 2014 and recce work to determine the alignment is currently being done.
The new trails will begin from Section 9 and will provide forest recreation opportunities for those exercising at Taman Rimba Riang. If you would like to have a hand in building these new trails, we are always looking for new volunteers! Look for updates on scheduled Trail Days for 2014.
